Well Water Treatment
Private well water can look clear and still have problems that affect its taste, smell, plumbing or everyday use. The right treatment depends on what is actually in the water, and one property’s needs can be very different from another’s.
At Davis Water Conditioning, we provide well water treatment for homes and properties throughout San Luis Obispo County. We work with water softening, water filtration, reverse osmosis, ozone and UV systems, selecting the treatment according to the water conditions and the needs of the property.
Having Problems With Your Well Water?
Well water doesn’t come from the same treated municipal supply as city water. Its mineral content and other characteristics depend on the source and conditions around the well.
You might notice hard-water scale around faucets, sediment in the water, an unpleasant odor, or taste problems when drinking or cooking. Sometimes, the water looks and smells normal, but you still want to know more about its quality.
The first step is to find the problem. A treatment system should address the conditions found in your water, not just the symptoms you happen to notice.
Well Water Treatment For Different Problems
There isn’t one filter or treatment system that works for every well and contaminant. Depending on the water analysis and the problem involved, we may recommend one treatment method or a combination of systems.
Water Softening
If calcium and magnesium are causing hard water buildup, a water softener can reduce water hardness throughout the property. This is useful when scale on fixtures, plumbing and water-using equipment is the main concern.
Whole-House Water Filtration System
A whole-house water filter treats water as it enters the property. The appropriate system depends on what needs to be filtered and the capabilities of the selected equipment.
Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis provides more intensive treatment at a specific point of use, commonly for drinking and cooking water. It can be a useful part of a well-water setup when the water test results and treatment goals call for it.
Ozone and UV Treatment
Ozone and ultraviolet systems use different treatment methods and may be appropriate for particular water-quality concerns. The choice depends on the water conditions and the intended application. We can assess whether either technology belongs in your treatment system.
Start With What's In Your Water
Start With What's In Your Water
Before choosing a well-water treatment system, it’s important to understand the incoming water. Hardness, sediment, taste and odor issues can point toward different treatments, and some concerns cannot be identified by appearance alone.
We will test your water, explain the findings and determine what treatment makes sense for your property. If the results indicate a problem that needs a specific treatment method, we can discuss the available options and how they fit together.
If you already have a treatment system, we can also consider whether it is appropriate for your water and whether it may need service or a different setup.
Treatment For Rural Homes And Larger Properties
Treatment For Rural Homes And Larger Properties
Well-water treatment needs can vary with the property. A home with a private well may need a different setup from a larger property with substantial water use or a storage tank.
We provide residential water treatment and have experience with larger well-water applications, including custom ozone systems through our Innovation Ozone line. For projects with more demanding requirements, system selection needs to account for the water conditions, intended use and amount of water that needs to be treated.
We won’t assume that a standard residential filter is the right answer for every property.
Installation, Service And Maintenance
Selecting the right equipment is only part of the job. The system also needs to suit the plumbing, water supply and intended use, with maintenance carried out according to the equipment requirements.
We install residential water softeners, reverse osmosis systems, whole-house water filtration systems, ozone and UV disinfection systems. We also service existing water treatment equipment, including most makes and models of water softeners and 3M reverse osmosis systems.
If you already have equipment installed, you can contact us to discuss the system and the problems you’re experiencing. A replacement isn’t always the first thing to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I know if my well water needs treatment?
Changes in taste, odor, appearance or mineral buildup can indicate a water-quality issue. However, some problems aren’t visible. Water testing is the way to find what needs attention and whether treatment is necessary.
Can you treat well water that smells like rotten eggs?
An odor like rotten eggs can be associated with hydrogen sulfide, but the cause should be confirmed before choosing treatment. Different treatment methods may be appropriate depending on the water conditions.
Can well water cause scale buildup on faucets and appliances?
Yes, water containing elevated levels of calcium and magnesium can leave mineral deposits on fixtures and contribute to scale inside water-using equipment. A water softener may be appropriate if hardness is confirmed as the cause.
Is reverse osmosis suitable for well water?
It can be, particularly when additional treatment is needed for cooking and drinking water. The incoming water should be evaluated first because some conditions may require pretreatment to protect the RO system.
How often does well-water treatment equipment need maintenance?
It depends on the system, incoming water quality and usage. Filters, membranes, lamps and other components have different maintenance schedules. Following the manufacturer’s recommendations helps keep the equipment operating as intended.
Is well-water treatment different for a business?
It can be. A business may use more water or have specific requirements that a typical household system cannot meet. We consider the intended use, water conditions and demand when evaluating commercial treatment needs.
What should I do if my well water looks and smells normal?
Normal appearance and smell don’t establish that water is safe or free of unwanted substances. Testing is the best way to investigate concerns that can’t be identified by sight or smell alone.
